Travel Writing

What is travel writing?

What is it about?

What are the features of its language?

Your task: By reading examples of travel writing, you have today’s lesson and tonight’s homework to come up with some answers to these three questions.

USEFUL WEBSITES:

What to do: Find examples of travel writing. The websites above will help. Then:

  1. EASY: Write a definition of travel writing, or find one you agree with and write it down.
  2. NOT SO EASY: Make a list of typical travel writing topics, based on your research. Aim for ten things.
  3. HARDER: How many features of the language of travel writing can you come up with? You might manage as many as ten here. Remember that “language features” means individual words, kinds of sentences, organisation and structure of the whole thing, tone, purpose, formality, voice, tense – that sort of thing.

I’ve done the first question but I can’t find anything for the 2nd or the 3rd question.

Well done for the work you’ve done so far Amy.

In order to answer the 2nd question you need to think about what sorts of topics are mentioned on the sites you have visited and make a list. For instance, do any of them talk about health risks when travelling?

The 3rd question is much more difficult and asks you to think about the way the sites are written – what sort of vocabulary do they use? How easy are they to understand? Why is this?

      Good luck, Mr Didau

James, the EASY homework is simply explain what travel writing is. Or, even easier, find a definition you agree with.
